Photos for Music Magazine.

I like the first of these two images because it is the better one so I wouldn't use the one below.

This image is a possibility for the man image on the front cover.
I won't be using the one below. It's not one of the best.
I won't use the image below.

These two I like, I think they worked well and they are definite possibilities for the main image on the front cover.
I also really like the above image and the below two images.

I won't be using these images of the waistcoat as they didn't really work well. I was trying to take natural photos as the models were moving around so they didn't look so posed, but these didn't work at all I don't think.

I like the above image and it is a possibility to use it.

 I like these two images.

These two are nice but I won't use them as I have taken better ones.

I like these images with the signs and I will use one to go on the cover mount space to show where the free album copy would go. If the album were real the image I use would also be on the cover of the case.

I wanted to take some photos that didn't look so staged, so I took a few long shots to show the studio and I quite like the way they turned out.

I like these photos a lot and I think that the signs worked really well.

I wanted some less serious photos to show that the band were fun.

Some images like the one below did not come out well. If I were to take them again then I would need to check that the camera was in focus first.

Music magazine plan.

This is my plan for the layout of the front cover of my music magazine. I like the triangular sell line in the corner and the skyline. I believe that they will be good at catching the attention of a potential buyer. However it may be difficult to create an image that will fit this space.
This is the plan for my music magazine contents page. I thought the arrows would look cool, although maybe music notes would be more relevant. However I would not have much space for images on this page, which is what many music magazines do to advertise what is in the issue. For this reason I will probably not use this plan for my real magazine.

This is my plan for the double-page spread which I want to make into an interview. I really like having a small quote or two in the middle of the text to stand out and I will probably do this in my real magazine. I need to add page numbers onto the bottom corners though. Also it is a bit sterile and not very informal and relaxed looking.

Music magazine analysis.

Q Magazine was first published in October 1986 and has since then reached it's 200th edition. It is iconic for its red and white logo which is always in the top left-hand corner as it can be easily found in a news agents which I like as it makes the magazine easily identifiable.

Kerrang magazine was first published in June 1981 as a one-off supplement of 'sounds' newspaper. It is a devoted rock music magazine and the design of the masthead goes with that, as do the colours black, red and white. The layout and masthead design make it easily recognisable.

Vibe magazine is generally and hip-hop and R&B magazine. It shut down in 2009, but was re-purchased and is now issued every other month mainly on line.  It uses the same masthead each time to be recognisable and bright bold colours. The sell lines also match the font and colours of the cover which I like as it gives the magazine a very striking look.

Smash Hits today, in the 90's and in the 80's. The masthead has changed and the more modern one uses much brighter colours to stand out. It also gradually gets more and more cluttered on the front cover, ranging from an image of Madonna and a few sell lines in the 80's, to 7 images and numerous sell lines, anchorage titles and sections.

NME magazine stands for 'New Musical Express' as it was originally a music newspaper when it was first published in March 1952. It gradually became a music magazine in 1998. It generally uses the same layout each issue, however sometimes the masthead colour changes to match the colour scheme of the main image or cover. NME is easy to identify from the logo which is good because it means the buyer can find it quickly.

All of these magazines generally have a particular sort of layout which they use on each issue to be easily recognised by their fans.

Introduction.

As you can see from the last post, I am now moving on to the main part of the course-the music magazine.

I will be designing a front cover, contents page and double page spread for a music magazine. I will use a minimum of 4 of my own images.
I have now planned the layout and will be moving on to plan what I want the magazine to have in it.

College Life Magazine.

In this front cover I have used one photo as both the background for the page and the main image. I chose this picture because it is portrait so was easier to fit into the page size and also it shows students at college which is essentially what the magazine is all about.
I called my magazine 'College Life' as it explains what the magazine will be about to the customer and I also made the masthead into the logo as well so it will be eye catching and recognisable on a newsagent's shelf.
The skyline at the top of the page attracts the customer's attention and so does the anchorage title.
Then I added in two sell lines related to the contents of the magazine to hopefully draw the customer in to buy the magazine.
I have also added four elements which every magazine should have; bar code, publishing date, issue number and price. These make the magazine look more realistic and professional. I priced my magazine at 50p as my questionnaire results concluded that most people wanted to pay less than £1 for the college magazine I was creating.
I used the programme 'Microsoft Publisher 2010' to create my magazine front cover and contents page as it was the best programme to apply to magazine making. One of the set colour schemes on the programme was called 'parrot' and it involved different shades of red, blue, green, purple, Indigo, grey and white. I chose this to be my colour scheme as my questionnaire results showed that more people wanted the magazine to be colourful than black and white and I thought these colours would be eye catching.

I carried this colour scheme into the contents page with the text and background.
I used five of my photos as this way I can show more of college life and these were the five that I liked best. They are different shots including mid shots and long shots.
I used one image of students going up the stairs, and another of them going down because I liked the symmetry.
I created ten different pieces of content for my magazine which seemed appropriate to my questionnaire results and I coloured them alternately so as it would be easier to see which page number applied to each section.
I have used the font 'Berlin Sans FB' throughout these pages because I liked it and thought it was appropriate for a college magazine. Also I titled the contents page 'In this issue' instead of 'contents' because I thought it would be a bit different form other college magazines and seemed a bit more personal and less static.

Maybe if I were to make the magazine again I would come up with a more imaginative name for it and add some page numbers to the sell lines so the customer would know which page to turn to for the article they are interested in.
